Alle medicijnen hebben een houdbaarheidsdatum. Als deze overschreden is kan een medicijn niet meer worden gebruikt. Sommige medicijnen verliezen hun doeltreffendheid bij een patiënt na lang gebruik. Soms blijft het effect, maar zijn er minder bijwerkingen. Het kan ook zijn dat een bepaald medicijn onder invloed van een ander medicijn niet meer werkt.DP (4-10-01)
