Nasal Polyps

Question

What are nasal polyps and how do you know that your child has them? What symptoms would indicate the presence of nasal polyps or the need for treatment? What treatments are recommended?

Answer of our experts

Nasal polyps are benign growths that can partially or completely occlude the nose, obstructing nasal breathing. They are also accompanied often by mucopurulent (combination of mucus and pus) nasal discharge. They are diagnosed on physical examination by an otolaryngologist (ENT). Surgical removal of polyps is necessary if there is nasal obstruction. Antibiotics may be needed to treat the infection (sinusitis). There is an increased risk for sinusitis and nasal polyps in individuals with CdLS
